PCR test. Also called a molecular test, this COVID-19 test detects genetic material of the virus using a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A fluid sample is collected by inserting a long nasal swab (nasopharyngeal swab) into your nostril and taking fluid from the back of your nose or by using a shorter nasal swab (mid-turbinate swab) to get a sample. The nose swab PCR test for COVID-19 is the most accurate and reliable test for diagnosing COVID-19. A positive test means you likely have COVID-19. A negative test means you probably did not have COVID-19 at the time of the test. This test is best used at day 3-7 days of symptoms.
Also called the Antigen test. This COVID-19 test detects certain proteins in the virus. Using a long nasal swab to get a fluid sample, some antigen tests can produce results in minutes (at Resolve MD detection in 10 minutes) but there's an increased chance of false-negative results — meaning it's possible to be infected with the virus but have a negative result. Depending on the situation, the doctor may recommend a PCR test to confirm a negative antigen test result.
Symptomatic individuals:
Best tested between day 1 and 5 of symptoms. *If you have symptoms and have a negative test the CDC recommends following this test with a PCR test.
Asymptomatic individuals:
If you are asymptomatic this test can have a high false negative rate and should not be used to give a false sense of security that you do not have coronavirus. Some studies show a false negative rate at high as 50 percent.
A COVID-19 diagnostic test is needed if:
